1886년 토머스 하디가 46세에 출간한 장편소설이다. 주인공인 헨처드가 술에 취해 부인과 딸을 다른 남자에게 팔아넘기는 다소 충격적인 장면으로부터 이야기가 시작된다. 다음날 술에서 깬 헨처드는, 술에 취한 자신의 행동을 이해 못하고 다른 남자를 따라간 부인을 원망하면서도 자신의 실수를 부끄러워하며 자신의 나이와 맞먹는 21년 동안 금주를 맹세한다. 그리고 처자식을 찾기 위한 방랑길에 오르지만 처자식을 데리고 떠난 그 선원이 다른 곳으로 이민을 떠났다는 소식을 듣고는 더 이상 처자식 찾기를 포기하고, 웨섹스의 구석진 곳, 캐스터브리지 도시에 정착하기로 결심을 한다. 그렇게 세월이 지나고, 황량하고 힘든 길을 걸어서 어느 모녀가 헨처드를 찾아 캐스터브리지로 오게 된다. The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), subtitled "The Life and Death of a Man of Character", is a novel by British author Thomas Hardy. It is set in the fictional town of Casterbridge (based on the town of Dorchester in Dorset). The book is one of Hardy's Wessex novels, all set in a fictional rural England. Hardy began writing the book in 1884 and wrote the last page on 17 April 1885. Within the book, he writes that the events took place "before the nineteenth century had reached one-third of its span". Literary critic Dale Kramer sees it as being set somewhat later?in the late 1840s, corresponding to Hardy's youth in Dorchester.
